Our Story
As a team of travel enthusiasts, we strongly believe that the experiences we gain from our travels not only enrich our own lives but also positively impact the lives of the people and communities we visit. The traveller’s eternal search for off-beat locations and adventure is supported today by an incredible amount of connectivity due to virtual access. However, this increase in access and travel does not very often convert into added economic value for the local communities that have preserved nature, wildlife and cultural authenticity for generations in these places that we dream of finding. These communities are often left behind as popular tourist destinations take over due to tourist convenience.
We wanted to find a way that allowed our love for travelling to become part of the solution for these
communities. From economic development to cultural diversity and nature conservation, we want to support
our rural communities and drive sustainable
change that can be measured and truly makes an impact.
That’s why we created Amakarro; a
platform made by a team that loves data and loves to travel. We are dedicated to sharing unique travel
experiences
with responsible travellers, enabling us to support community development and work with our site
partners to preserve all the amazing experiences they offer. Together, we hope to begin a measured march
towards sustainable tourism –
anchored in doing good for the planet, its people and its economies.
What’s in a name?
We wished to create a community that supports inclusivity, environmental good and social progress. Something
that celebrates culture and diversity. As it turns out, Manipur beat us to it…by a few hundred centuries.
From the world’s
only floating national park with 17 species of rare mammals (Keibul Lambjao) to an all women-run market
dating back to the 16th century, that supports over 5000 women today, Manipur has been an inclusive,
enduring and community led Jewel
in North-east India.
We took our inspiration from this land of beauty and culture, by naming our
platform using the Meitei language from Manipur. Ama = One, Karro = Win. We hope to work together with you
so we can win together
